What Is Dry Eye?
Dry Eye is a condition in which a person doesn’t have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye it is a common and often chronic eye problem. Tears are necessary for maintain the health of the front surface of the eye. With each blind of the eyelids tears are spread across the front surface of the cornea. Tears reduce the risk of eye infections, provide lubrication, and help wash away foreign matter in the eye, excess tears flow into the small drainage ducts in the corners of the eyelids.

What Causes Dry Eye?
People with dry eyes usually do no produce enough tears or their tears are of poor quality, it can occur when tear production and drainage are not in balance. Dry eyes can develop due to many reasons such as age, gender, medications, medical conditions, environmental conditions (Seasonal Allergies), long term use of contact lenses, refractive surgeries, etc.
Symptoms of Dry Eye
- Redness
- Light Sensitivity
- Watery eye
- Burning, itching, stinging sensations
- Blurry Vision
- Mucus near the eye
Diagnosing Dry Eye
A comprehensive eye examination, patient history, external evaluation of the cornea, eyelids, lid structure, and blink dynamic can help determine if a patient has dry eyes.
Treatment and Prevention
Treatment and prevention may include drops, punctal plugs, wearing sunglasses, avoiding air being blown directly into your eyes, drinking plenty of water, avoiding drier environments, supplements, etc.. Once a complete eye exam if preformed Dr. Jolly or Dr. Hess will be able to develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
